Employee Benefits - Available Health Spending Account
Health Spending Accounts (HSA) present a viable option to supplement a core employee health and dental plan.
An HSA is like a bank account. The money or credits as they are called are credited for each employee and can be used to pay for medical and dental expenses, including deductibles and co-payments not otherwise covered under the group benefit plan.
- Expenses reimbursed through the HSA must qualify under the federal Income Tax Act as medical, vision or dental costs. This includes everything from prescription drugs, private hospital room accommodation, adult orthodontia and laser eye surgery. Your regional Canada Revenue Agency office can provide a complete list of qualifying expenses.
- Costs not eligible for coverage would include those that private insurers are not legally allowed to cover, services or supplies you are entitled to for free, and any part of an expense that can be paid under another group plan or government plan.
- The HSA covers eligible dependents. If dependent children are no longer eligible for basic health benefits because of student age restrictions, they can qualify under the HSA.
